Artist statement

A painting of an empty bus at night, a woman melancholically staring out of a window in a restaurant, and another asleep in a train or perhaps just closing her eyes for a brief moment after a long day. All of the figures represented in the paintings of Kiki Beernink (1995) are young women captured in a moment of emptiness, either due to exhaustion or loneliness, and seemingly unaware of their surroundings. Beernink finds meaning in their everyday and subtle intimate moments, ones that usually go unnoticed. Seeing the scenes all together might reveal a larger narrative of social expectations, gender roles, and the precarious conditions we find living in metropolitan cities.
